Identifying Symptoms of Cell Phone and Internet Addiction


A report published in the year 2016, in Frontiers in Psychiatry, suggests the use of DSM-5 criteria for compelling gambling and substance abuse to measure problematic Smartphone use. Although problematic Smartphone are not defined as addictive, they can be evaluated as behavioural disorders.

Using this model, the possible symptoms may include:

Conscious use of Prohibited references or in potentially dangerous situations (e.g., texting while driving).

Excessive use that causes conflicts with family; avoiding family or shared events in favour of Smartphone use.

Negative impact on school, family, social or emotional function.

Despite negative consequences, using Smartphone continuously.

Frequently, impulsively doing continuous inspection of the phone even in very short periods of time (every few minutes there is a strong urge to check).

Sleep disturbances also known as insomnia because of frequent checking.

Having an urge to be constantly connected.

Anxiety to get reply from opposite side immediately.

Increase in use to obtain a satisfaction or to resist dysphonic (sad) mood.

Urge to respond immediately to messages and alerts.

Increased anxiety and / or irritability when not accessing the phone.

Feeling uncomfortable when unable to use the phone.

It is difficult to distinguish between normal (or slightly upraised) daily use and problematic use.

Now just go through these questions:

Is my child becoming irritable, angry, violent or even nervous when the phone is taken away or unable to be used?

Is my child skipping or avoiding social events or any other activities to use smart phones instead?

Is my child's personal care (hygiene), friendship, family relationships, or school work negatively impacted by the use of Smartphone?

Is using a Smartphone interfering with my child’s normal sleep?

Are there major changes in my adolescent eating habits that can't be described otherwise?

Are there any major changes to the mood that can't be described otherwise?

If the answer to any of these is yes, be careful.
